Cricket coach wants my right-handed 10 year old to start batting left-handed. Why?

He's been at the academy since last summer. This week the coach told him he 'looks like a natural leftie' and should switch his stance. He writes and throws right-handed. The reasons given were 'lead hand', 'more left-handers get picked' and 'easier to switch now than later'. Does this hold up, or is it one coach's theory? Has anyone's child switched, and how did the first season go?

Not cricket, but my daughter's badminton coach changed her grip at 6 and she was miserable for a month, then better than before. I couldn't tell you whether it was the change or just the month.

No children yet, so a question from the sidelines: did the coach say what happens if it hasn't worked after a few months? I'd want to know he can switch back without losing a year.

My cousin bats left and does everything else right-handed. He says it was the best thing his coach ever did. One example, of course. I'd ask for a month of trying it in the nets before deciding anything.
