Covered her ears through the whole Independence Day programme at preschool. Ear muffs at three?

velvet_pool_5664

Teacher sent the video. Every other child waving a flag. Mine, front row, both hands on her ears, forty minutes 😅 Same with hand dryers in malls, the temple bell, the drill when the neighbours were renovating. Not crying exactly. Just won't take her hands down. Do kids' ear muffs help, or does it make her more dependent on them? Teacher said 'nothing to worry'. Not sure.

Did the teacher mention it as something she sees in class generally, or only at the programme? A microphone and speakers at a school function are far louder than a normal day, and many children cover their ears for that alone. If it is also the dryers and the drill, that pattern seems worth mentioning to your paediatrician, simply so that someone who has examined her can say whether anything needs checking. I would not draw conclusions from one programme.

Our son wore ear defenders at a cousin's wedding last winter, the kind sold for children at sports events. They did help him stay through the band. We also noticed that he then wanted them for things that were not loud, the ceiling fan, once even a birthday song, so we stopped carrying them everywhere. Whether that was the right decision I could not tell you; it is only what we observed.

A boy in our son's class wears them for assembly. The other children seem to think they are headphones and ask for a turn, which surprised me. I had assumed they would make him stand out. In that class at least, they made him a minor celebrity. Did your son mind taking them off once the band stopped, or did he want them straight back on?

Ours was very similar till about six. Diwali crackers were the worst, he would go and sit in the bathroom with the door shut and wait it out. Most of it eased with age. He still leaves the room when the vacuum goes on. But last year he stood on stage for the annual day choir, so things do change ❤️

mine is 9 and still leaves any mall washroom the second someone switches on a hand dryer. school functions she manages fine. i'd try the muffs at home with the vacuum running first, so they're not a strange new thing on the big day

Only seeing this now. From the school side: we have had a few children wear ear defenders for assemblies and rehearsals, and what usually helps most is letting the child sit at the end of a row near a door, so she knows she can step out. That is worth asking her teacher for, along with permission for the muffs. If you do buy them, let her cover them in stickers. A child is far more willing to wear something she thinks of as hers ❤️
