Inviting a classmate with Down syndrome to my son's get-together. How do I ask his parents what would help?

My son is 10 and wants a small get-together with a few class friends at a play area once the mid-terms are over. One boy in his class has Down syndrome. My son likes him and wants him there, and so do I. I don't know his parents well. I don't want to send the same message as everyone else and leave them to work out whether the place suits him, but I also don't want to call and make it sound as though he needs special handling. How would you approach it? If you are the parent of a child who often gets left off these lists, what would you want the other family to do?

I don't have experience with this; my daughter is two. Speaking as someone who might be the other parent one day, I think I'd want to be asked directly and privately, before the invitation goes to the whole group. In my work I interview people a lot, and an open question like "what would make this easy for him?" nearly always gets a better answer than a careful yes-or-no one.

That's the way I was leaning. I'll call his mother this week instead of messaging, and keep the question open like that.
