Considering State Board for LKG for the first time. Shanti Vidya Niketan in Yousufguda?

maple_river_7571

We had assumed CBSE all along, but we're likely to rent on the Yousufguda side next year and the shortlist there includes a few State Board schools, Shanti Vidya Niketan High School among them. Our daughter would join LKG. Two things I'd like to understand. At LKG, does the board make any practical difference, or is pre-primary much the same everywhere? And if she starts in State Board and we want CBSE later, at what class does that switch get difficult? If anyone has a child at Shanti Vidya Niketan, I'd also be glad to hear what the day is like.

Ask the school which curriculum they follow for LKG. Some State Board schools use their own pre-primary books in the early years, and the board only shows up from class 1. That would answer your first question for this school specifically.

We went through the same question this year. For LKG I couldn't see much difference between the two we visited; both were rhymes, letters, numbers up to 50 and a lot of colouring. Where I did notice a difference was in the class 1 and 2 textbooks they showed us, so that's where I'd look. We stayed with CBSE in the end, mostly because I didn't want to make the decision twice.

I mentor first-year undergraduates who came through every board you can name. By the time they reach me, you can't tell who did which. That doesn't make a switch in class 8 painless, but the long view is less dramatic than it looks from LKG.

At four, the board matters far less than the teacher and how many children are in the room. Ask about class size before anything else.

I teach primary, and children who join in class 3 or 4 from a State Board school usually catch up within a term in most subjects. It takes longer when the second language changes as well. If CBSE later is a real possibility, I'd keep an eye on which second language she would be learning from the start.

That's useful, thank you. I hadn't thought about the second language at all. We speak Marathi at home, so Hindi would be the easier one for her either way. I'll ask what they offer and from which class.

we had the same hesitation when our daughter started. in the end the day-to-day was about the walk to the gate and whether she liked her teacher. the board question came back around class 2, and by then we'd mostly stopped worrying about it.
