Confirm class 11 continuation by October? Our daughter's school already wants an answer

violet_compass_3602

Our elder daughter's school runs up to class 12, and she is in class 10 this year. A circular came home this week asking parents to confirm by mid-October whether she will continue into class 11 there, along with a stream preference. She hasn't decided on a stream, and we had planned to look at a couple of other options after the board results. I understand the school needs numbers, but October feels early. Did other parents confirm and then change later? I would like to know whether a confirmation now is treated as binding in practice, or whether it is mostly a headcount.

I teach at a school that does the same thing, so I can only speak for how it works there. The confirmation is mainly for planning sections and teachers. Students do change their minds after results, and the school adjusts. Do ask your school whether any payment is attached to it, because that is usually what makes it feel binding.

Our grandson is much younger, so no direct experience. But when my own children were in school, every school wanted early confirmation. Most families confirmed and quite a few left anyway. Wouldn't lose sleep over it.
