Class 4 son had answers written on his palm in a class test. Teacher sent a note

lemon_moon_4086

The note in his diary was short and polite: he was found with a few answers written on his palm during Friday's EVS class test, the paper has been taken back, and could we please speak to him. He hasn't mentioned it at home. I've read the note several times and haven't brought it up yet, because I don't trust myself to stay calm. What did you do the first time your child was caught copying?

Better at 9 in a class test than at 15 in a board practical. Our daughter had a similar note in class 5. We didn't punish at home because the school already had. We made her redo the test at the dining table and talk through what she hadn't understood. It never came up again.

my daughter once came home and confessed to copying one spelling from the girl next to her. she cried more about it than i expected. i didn't have to say much at all

That's the question. He's been nervous about EVS since the last test, and I didn't take it seriously at the time.

      Replying to @lemon_moon_4086

That's worth knowing before you talk to him. Start with the nervousness, not the palm. If he feels you understand why he did it, he's more likely to tell you the truth about the rest.

Before you speak to him, find out what the school has already done. Paper taken back, a zero, a talk with the class teacher? If they've dealt with it, your part is the conversation, not a second punishment. And ask the teacher how many answers. "A few" could mean two or ten.
