Changing schools next year with a daughter who has type 1 diabetes. What did you ask at admission?

fennel_anklet_55

My daughter is 9 and has type 1 diabetes. Her present school has been kind, but there is no nurse, and on most days I am the one going at lunch to check her sugar and give the insulin. I teach part-time at another school so I can manage it, but it means I can never take a full timetable. For next year I am looking at schools on the Kothapet, Dilsukhnagar and LB Nagar side that have a nurse or a medical room with someone trained. When you were applying, how did you bring this up? I don't want to hide it, but I also want a fair chance at the seat.

'Has a nurse' can mean full-time or someone who comes twice a week. Ask the hours, and who covers when she's on leave. Also ask who exactly gives the insulin on a day you can't come. You want the name of a role, not "we will manage".

And whether that person has done it for a child before, or would be learning on your daughter. Big difference. A school that says "let's sit down with your doctor first" sounds better to me than one that says yes on the spot.

We're only at the preschool stage, so nothing this serious, but when we visited schools I asked to see the medical room itself. Two of them took a while to find the key. That was more useful than anything in the prospectus. Wishing you a smooth search ❤
