caught my 11 yr old writing his holiday book review off the back cover

violet_wave_5912

school gave a reading list for the holidays, three books, one page review for each. found him tonight writing the review for a book he hasn't opened. straight off the blurb on the back. his argument: the back cover tells you what happens, so it's the same thing. i half see his point, it does look like a dull book. but class 6 is coming and i don't want this to become how he does things. do i make him read it, or let it go and pick my battles

  • I was exactly this child. I wrote reviews from the blurb for years, until a class 7 teacher asked me one question about the ending in front of everyone. That cured me faster than anything said at home. Has anyone asked him why he didn't want to read this one? Sometimes it's the book, not the reading.

Our daughter tried this till about class 8. What helped was reading the first chapter together, out loud, taking turns. After that she usually wanted to know what happened. Ten minutes, a few evenings. Not more in the holidays ❤

Small correction to the 'same thing' argument: teachers have read those back covers too, and a review written from one is usually the first thing they spot. My grandson's older cousin found that out the hard way in class 7 😄 Easier to read the first two chapters now and write from those.

Ours is the opposite. Writes three pages on a twelve-page book because a teacher once said 'more detail'. I'd take a bit of shortcutting and some nudging over that 🙂
