A mother in our class group is blind, and every school notice this week came as a photo

One of the mothers in my daughter's class group is blind and uses a screen reader. This week the school sent the book list, the timetable and the van details, all as photographs of printed sheets. Her screen reader can't read them. She has been asking other parents to type them out, and from the messages it's clear she does this every term. I work in software and I know the fix is simple: send the same notice as text, or as a proper PDF. The part I can't decide is how to raise it. Do I speak to her first, write to the class teacher, or go to the school office directly? I don't want to speak for her, and I'd rather it didn't become a long thread in the group.

Speak to her first, I think. She may have a preference about how it's raised, or she may already have tried and been brushed off. Either way she should hear it from you before the school does ♥

    • Yes. Ask her first, privately. And keep it out of the group entirely.

      Replying to @gentle_notebook_3846

When you write, attach the actual photo notices. 'Please make it accessible' is easy to ignore. Three examples aren't.

Vice principal here. Write to the office, copy the class teacher, and be specific: which notices, what format would work, who is affected. Notices are usually typed by one person in the office who has never been told. If it goes through the class group it will get lost under fifty 'noted' messages.

Thank you, both points taken. I called her this morning first, as suggested above. She's happy for me to raise it, and said she's tired of being the one who asks. I'll write to the office tonight with the three notices attached and copy the class teacher.
