I am wondering whether she packs it herself in the morning or gets it ready the evening before. We had a similar question when my daughter was a baby, though in our case the family member stayed. What helped us think was writing down the hours your mother covers now, and separately what she does in them that isn't childcare: cooking, being the second adult in the house, sitting with the caregiver. A second caregiver replaces the hours. It may not replace the rest. On daycare at seven months I have no direct experience, so I'll leave that to others.

I can tell you what we did, not whether it was right. We gave our daughter a 'bin' of her own, a small basket by the door, and she could throw things in there as much as she liked. The real bin got a lid with a latch. It reduced the problem rather than ending it. She still puts things in odd places.
