14 yr old wants a latch on the inside of her bedroom door

mint_sparrow_4003

she says she just wants to know nobody will walk in. her grandmother does, all the time, without knocking. i get it. i also see enough children in emergencies to not love the idea of a locked door. she's 14 and otherwise very easy. what did you do

Ours is 11 and the grandmother part sounds very familiar 🤷‍♀️ Did you try a knock-first rule with her grandmother before the latch? Took about a month to stick in our house, with reminders.

my older one got one last year but his reason was his little brother not us. we put it high up and the rule is he opens if i knock twice. no trouble so far. the knock and wait part matters more than the hardware i think

We went through the same debate with our daughter last year. What settled it was a latch that can be opened from outside with a coin in an emergency. She has her privacy and I stopped lying awake about it. Most hardware shops near us had them once I knew what to ask for.

reading this at 2 am next to a 1 year old who has just learnt to open doors. noting the coin latch for around 2039

my son asked for the same at 12. i said yes if he answers when someone knocks. he answers. the answer is 'what'.

'what' 😂 can already picture my son doing exactly this
