  • 0on 11 year old insisted on applying to a selective school for Grade 7. How do I prepare her for a no?

I haven't been through a selective test with either of mine, so take this as an outsider's view. I'd ask the school for a sample paper or topic list early. Knowing what kind of questions to expect takes away a lot of the shock on the day. On before and after: my older daughter is 13, and what helped with a placement test last year was saying, more than once, that a test tells you whether a school fits, not whether she's clever. It sounded a bit rehearsed to me. She repeated it back to me later, so something landed.

  • 3on My 8 year old wants to draw like me. Art class, or just sketch together on weekends?

Our elder daughter did a class like that from about 8 to 11. She learnt shading and perspective, and she also learnt to draw the same peacock for every competition. What she remembers fondly now, at twelve, is drawing with her cousins in the holidays. I think the two things gave her different things. Could you do both, but choose a class that doesn't look like a template factory?

  • 2on SLATE in Abids runs four boards. How is the board picked for a class 1 child?

Thank you. The lane point is fair; we would probably choose the flat after the school, not before. Did you find many pre-nursery options on that side, or is it mostly the bigger schools?
