Toddler has started putting things in the dustbin. The TV remote went in yesterday

First it was a sock. Then my spectacle case. Yesterday we turned the house upside down for the TV remote and found it under vegetable peels in the kitchen bin. She watched us search the whole time, very pleased with herself. Amma says on the phone that she sees us throwing things away and wants to help. Probably true 🙂 But I'd like to stop losing things. Do we lock the bins, or is there some way to redirect this?

I can tell you what we did, not whether it was right. We gave our daughter a 'bin' of her own, a small basket by the door, and she could throw things in there as much as she liked. The real bin got a lid with a latch. It reduced the problem rather than ending it. She still puts things in odd places.

A basket of her own is a nice idea. She'll probably put the remote in that too, but at least we'll know where to look.

Check the bin before it goes out, every time, for a few months. That's the unglamorous part nobody mentions. We lost a set of house keys this way with our daughter, many years ago, and only realised after a new lock had been fitted.
