Word problems only make sense to my 8 year old when I say them in Marathi

Class 3 maths has moved on to word problems and my daughter gets stuck on almost every one. Not the sums, the English. 'How many more' and 'how many are left' trip her up every time. If I read the same question to her in Marathi she solves it in ten seconds. Aai says just keep doing that, but the test will be in English and I won't be sitting next to her 🙂 Is this a phase, or should I be working on her English reading separately?

We had this with Malayalam at home. Our daughter understood the maths but kept tripping on phrases like 'how many more than'. Her teacher suggested a short list of these key phrases, each with a tiny example, kept inside the maths notebook. Translating for her is fine for now, I think, as long as you slowly do less of it. Does her school send practice questions home, or does she only see them in the test?

Only in class and in the test. Made the phrase list yesterday, she decorated it with stars, and in last night's homework she read the English twice before asking me. Small win. Simpler than all my explaining.
