Weekly boarding for 11th and 12th, home every weekend. Anyone tried the middle option?

He's 15 and in class 10. For junior college he's set on a place across town. Daily, that's close to three hours on the road. Full residential means we'd see him once a month if we're lucky, and his sister is in class 12 right now, so I can tell you a teenager needs feeding and arguing with more than once a month. The college has a weekday hostel option, Monday morning to Friday evening. On paper it solves the travel and he's home Saturday and Sunday. What I can't judge: does a weekly hostel give them enough structure for study, or is it just a bed? Do the weekends turn into laundry and catch-up and nothing else? And does a 16 year old settle into a place he leaves every Friday? He's keen. I'm the one doing the maths.

no experience with hostels, mine is 6. but 'he's keen and i'm doing the maths' is exactly how my partner described our tuition decisions last year. whatever you pick, ask what a normal tuesday evening in that hostel looks like. study hours, phone, food. the brochure will only show you the weekend

Agree with asking about the ordinary weekday. I haven't used a weekday hostel for my own children, so this comes from conversations with a few families I see at work rather than experience: the ones who were happy described a fixed supervised study block every evening and a clear rule on phones. The ones who weren't mostly called the hostel 'a place to sleep near the college'. That's a small sample, so treat it as a question to ask, not a finding.
