waiting a year before nursery. what did that year look like for yours?

he'll be around three this june, and the schools we like take nursery at a later age than the playschools near us. so it's either a year of playschool, or one more year at home with us and the help we have. i'm leaning towards home. but i don't want it to be a year of tv and errands. if your child had that in-between year, what did a normal week look like?

  • Ours is younger, so I'm reading closely. My partner's plan for that same year is two mornings a week at a music or play group and home the rest of the time. Would a part-time group like that suit you, or does it end up costing the same as playschool?

two mornings a week is close to what i had in mind. cost is about the same here, but the flexibility matters more. still looking for one near us.

We are in the same situation. Two schools gave me two different age rules for my daughter, so we also have one year gap. My wife sends her to a small play group near our house three days a week. Other days she goes with my mother to the market and the temple. I think she is learning more words from the market.

the market as a classroom, i like that. the two different age rules are exactly what confused us too.

Our son spent that year at home with his grandmother, many years ago now. He went into nursery a little behind on routines, sitting in a line and so on, and caught up within weeks. Ahead on most other things. I wouldn't worry about a home year as long as it has some shape to it.
