The new class 6 maths book is all puzzles and stories. How do I know what she's meant to have learnt?
Daughter is in class 6 this year and the maths book looks nothing like what her cousin had two years ago. Puzzles, games, 'try this' boxes, very few worked examples. She enjoys it, which is new for maths in our house. My problem is I can't tell what she's supposed to be able to do at the end of a chapter. The guide books in the shop don't match the way her book is written, and at the PTM the teacher's answer was 'she's doing well'. With the first assessment coming up, how are other parents checking that the basics are there? I don't want to sit her down with old-style drill sheets if that isn't how she'll be tested.
