Teaching a 7 year old to read an analogue clock. What routine made it click?

cinnamon_sketch_159

Every resource I find says it's easy with 'fun activities': paper plate clocks, songs, apps. My son made the paper plate clock in school and can tell me o'clock and half past. Anything else, he guesses, or goes and reads the microwave. I'm less interested in the activity than in the routine around it. Did you ask the time five times a day? Put one clock in a particular place? How long before quarter past and twenty to stopped being a mystery?

We took the digital clocks out of sight, and taped over the one on the microwave. Put a large analogue clock in the kitchen at her eye level. Then every small transition became 'when the long hand is on the 6'. It took most of a term. The cost was that I had to stop reading the time out loud myself, which is harder than it sounds.

I'd question whether it needs a routine at all at seven. Mine is about the same age and I've stopped pushing. He has o'clock and half past, and his school seems to cover the rest next year. He asked for a cheap analogue watch after seeing his grandfather's and checks it constantly. Mostly wrong, but he's checking.
