Summer before class 12: crash course, or the small app project he wants to build?

Our elder son finished class 11 last month. Nearly everyone in his batch is doing a six-week entrance crash course this summer. He wants to spend the holidays building a small app with two friends, and do the course only at weekends. He's sensible and his marks are fine. My worry is the usual one, that he'll look up in December and wish he had done what everyone else did. My partner's worry is the opposite. For those whose children went through class 12 recently, did the summer before decide anything?

just been through it. my daughter did the full crash course that summer and was burnt out by october. half her class were the same. the ones who did something of their own and kept a steady weekend routine seemed fresher by winter. no guarantees, but i don't think the summer decides it

My son is only 9, so I can't say about class 12. But this is my worry also. Every summer everyone puts their children in something, and he wants to do only his music practice. Good to read that the children with a steady routine were fresher.

What does the weekend course cover compared to the six-week one? If it's the same syllabus spread out, the only question is pace. If it's a cut-down version, that's a different decision. I would put the two timetables side by side before arguing about it.
