son spent the summer editing videos for his cousin and now says that's his career

class 10 starts next week. he spent most of may and june editing his cousin's cooking videos. he's good at it, i'll admit. the cousin's channel numbers went up and he takes credit for all of it. now 'video editor' is the answer to every career question. icse board year, so i'm trying to decide how seriously to take this and what to say that doesn't sound like 'study first'

Our 16 year old spent a summer certain she would be a film editor. What helped was asking her to make one piece for someone outside the family, a friend's small business. A stranger's feedback told her more than anything we could say. She still edits, but now she knows how much she likes it and how much of it was the praise. Would he do something like that for someone who isn't his cousin?

There are media and mass communication degrees after class 12, and some of the better programmes ask for a portfolio. Editing work counts. So it doesn't have to be career versus study. It can be a serious hobby through class 10 that builds into something he can show later.

portfolio is a useful word. he'll take 'build your portfolio' much better than 'it's a hobby'. will use it

let him have it. our son's career at 15 was game streaming. lasted till the pre-boards, then he forgot about it. didn't harm anything

Ha, mine was cooking videos. Akka still makes them, but only for the family group now. The editing skill stayed though, she does all the school presentations for her friends 😊
