Son joined the school table tennis club. Our dining table now has a net made of encyclopaedias

Three weeks into the club and he can't wait for Saturdays. So the dining table has become a court. The net is a row of old encyclopaedias, and the bats are two hardbound atlases because the club bats stay at school. We now eat dinner at the coffee table. Nobody voted on this.

We tried the same with our two. The book net kept collapsing whenever the ball hit it, so we ended up with a strip of cardboard taped along the edges. Lasted longer than the books.

      Replying to @lagoon_hammock_6402

Cardboard is the better engineering. The books also slide when the table is bumped, and at our house the bumping was deliberate whenever someone was losing.

Amma would never have allowed this on the dining table 😄 My son's version is badminton in the corridor. The neighbours have opinions.

There are folding table tennis tops that sit over a dining table, if this lasts beyond a few months. I would wait to see whether the club enthusiasm survives the first term before buying anything.
