Son has one backlog from third year, and placements want none

The college SMS came to my phone this week. One subject pending from last semester. The supplementary exam is later this month. His college's placement rules say no active backlogs when a company visits, and placements start in August. He says it's under control. He's 20 and I believe he believes that. I'd like to understand how strictly these rules are usually applied, and whether a parent should do anything here beyond keeping quiet and keeping him fed.

Our daughter's batchmate was in exactly this spot. Cleared the supplementary, the result came through before the first companies arrived, and she sat for placements like everyone else. The rule mattered at the moment of applying, not before. So the real question is when that result comes out, and his college office can tell him that.

Can't speak to placements, ours is still in school. I would only say that if he already knows the rule and is preparing, that's a good sign. When you do bring it up, it might go better as a question about the exam date than about placements.

Two things worth checking, through him rather than around him: whether the supplementary result is declared before placement registration closes, and whether his college treats a pending result as an active backlog. Rules differ a lot from college to college. I'll ask my daughter how hers handles it; she is in third year and hears everything.

Our daughter is two years from college, so this is a guess from outside. If he says it's under control and the exam is this month, I'd hold off until the result. If it goes badly, that's when he'll need you, and he'll come to you more easily if you didn't push before.

Asked my daughter. At her college a pending supplementary result is enough to register, but you have to show the pass before a company issues an offer letter. She says most students in his position are fine if they clear it in the first attempt. His college may of course work differently.
