son finishes homework in 20 minutes at his grandparents' place. at home it takes the whole evening

tuesdays and thursdays he goes to my parents after school. those days the homework is done, checked and the bag is packed before i pick him up. the other three days it's a two hour negotiation at our dining table, with me on calls in the next room. same homework, same boy. i don't think my parents are doing it for him, my father is far too strict for that. i just haven't worked out what's different.

At his grandparents' he's a guest, and guests behave. At home you're in the next room, which means he can stop and come and find you whenever he likes. When mine was that age, either I sat with her for the whole stretch or I was out of the house. The in-between was always the worst.

what time does he start at their place vs yours? if it's 4 there and 7 at home, that's most of your answer

Agree it's the clock. At my mother's it's milk, then homework, then TV, in that order every day, and nobody argues with her. At home the order changes every evening depending on who's free.

here it's the reverse. at the grandparents he gets fed every 15 min and told a story in between. homework there takes forever 🤷

My grandson comes to us three afternoons a week and he is the same. From the grandparent's chair: nothing else is happening in our house at that hour. No calls, no cooking rush, the TV stays off till he is done. I read the paper next to him. He knows I won't be pulled away, so he doesn't sit waiting for me to be.

Move all homework to their place 😄 Half joking. Ask your father what the routine is, step by step
