Since his class 10 marks came, my son talks only about 'data science'. Is that a degree or a job title?

Elder one's results came out last week, decent marks, and he's taking maths and computer science in class 11. Fine so far. Since then everything is data science. He has seen the ads for four-year data science degrees, the videos with salary numbers, all of it. I work in software and I still couldn't give him a straight answer on which degree gets you there. The data people I've worked with did plain BTech, a couple did statistics or economics, one was a physics postgraduate. Is a specialised degree at 18 a good bet or does it box him in? I know the word will probably change twice before he applies.

I'm on the sales side, selling to the companies that hire these people. The titles change every few years. A while ago every client wanted 'big data', now it's AI-something. What doesn't change is that they want someone who can write decent code and explain a number to a business person without hand-waving. If a degree builds both, fine. I'd read the second and third year course list rather than the brochure's first page and see how much is maths and programming versus tool names.

I'm not from the IT side. I did a diploma in electronics and work in the metro now. One thing I saw with my batchmates: the ones who learnt the basic branch properly moved easily when the trend changed. A special course name looks good on the poster. For now I'd make sure his class 11 and 12 maths is strong. That helps whichever way he goes.

What does he think a data scientist does all day? I asked my son the same question about 'AI' last year and the answer was mostly the salary video. When we sat down with what the juniors on my team really spend their days on (cleaning messy data, writing queries, a lot of meetings), he was less excited and more sure. He's leaning towards plain CSE with electives later. Not saying that's the answer, but get him to describe an ordinary week first.

Reading this closely because my daughter is a few years behind and already uses the same words. Do these data science degrees let a student move to regular computer science after first year if they change their mind? Nobody I've asked seems to know whether that is normal or depends entirely on the college.
