preschool in our community is taking registrations for babies who aren't one yet

the preschool inside our gated community has opened 'registrations' for its 2028 batch. our son isn't one yet. two neighbours have already paid, and one asked me in the lift whether we'd 'secured a seat', like it was a flight. i didn't know this was something people did for babies. is this normal in hyderabad now or is it just this preschool being clever

We got the same pitch when our son was about 18 months, from a playschool near Chandanagar. Didn't register, still got a seat when he was two and a half lol Ask them what happens if you register and then change your mind. That answer told us a lot.

When my boys were small nobody booked anything before the child could walk, that much I know. Ten years is a long time and things may have changed, but a registration this early is mostly about the money coming in early. If the akka who runs it is good, she'll find a seat for him when he's ready also.

up with his teeth again, reading these in the dark. 'the money coming in early' is exactly what my mother said too

What exactly does registration get you? A guaranteed seat, priority, or your name on a list? Is it refundable? Ask for it in writing. If they can't tell you, don't pay.

the flyer says 'priority list', non refundable, adjusted against the first term fee if you join. doesn't say anywhere what priority means

thought about it some more. paying to be on a list for something two years away, when we don't even know which side of the city we'll be living on by then. not doing it for now

For a sense of scale: we began looking at schools for our son about eight months before he was due to start nursery, and even that felt early at the time. A preschool inside your own community has an obvious reason to lock families in. The admission that will matter more later is the one for a full school, and those schools announce their timelines each year. You have time to see how things look when he's walking and talking.
