Picked for the school throwball team, but practice clashes with the art class she loves

peach_veranda_2917

My daughter's school has picked her for its throwball team for the inter-school tournament. She's thrilled. Practice is on Saturday mornings, which is when she has the art class she's been going to for three years and talks about more than school. She wants both. The art teacher can't move her to another batch this term. I can't decide whether to let her choose and live with it, or point out that the team might be a one-time thing while art will still be there next year. She's 10, so 'one-time thing' doesn't mean much to her.

my daughter had a similar clash last year, dance and a school sports event. we let her pick and she chose the school thing because her friends were in it, then missed dance terribly. she went back after but lost her spot in the front row for the annual show. so i'd ask her what she'll miss more, not which one she likes more

'What will you miss more' is a good way to put it. Is throwball practice every Saturday till the event, or only a few weeks? That changes it a lot.
