Partner and baby are at my in-laws' for the first three months, and I feel like a visitor

saffron_moon_3478

It's the family custom and I understand why: there's help around the clock, and my mother-in-law knows exactly what she's doing. I go every evening after work and on weekends. But it's been a month and I hold the baby for maybe an hour a day, usually after someone else has fed, changed and settled her. When they come home I'll be starting from scratch while everyone else knows her routines. For those who did this, how did you stay properly involved? Did you stay over some nights?

Same custom in our family when our daughter was born, at my parents' home, and Ba ran the house. What made the difference was my partner taking over the evening bath, every single day. Once Ba saw that was the one job nobody else touched, she stepped back. Ask for one task that's yours and only yours :)

    • The bath is a good idea. Our son is two months and I only started doing his evening bath last week. It's the one part of the day I feel I know what I'm doing.

Stay over on weekends if there's room. The nights are when you learn the baby.
