Our younger one speaks mostly Malayalam at home. Would he manage at St Anthonys in Himayatnagar?

St Anthonys Primary School is close to us, and we're thinking of moving our younger son there next June. He's at a small preschool now, where the teachers are very patient with him. At home it's mostly Malayalam. His English is a handful of words plus whatever he picks up from cartoons. His elder brother, who is in class 10, says he'll 'be fine'. His brother says that about everything. If you have children in the early classes there: is it mostly English from day one, or is some Telugu and Hindi mixed in? And did any of you have a child join with very little English? How long did it take?

kids that age pick up english so fast it's scary. ask the school when you go, they'll have seen it a hundred times

Our son spoke mostly Telugu until he started preschool, and for the first two months he hardly said a word at school. His teacher told us he understood far more than he let on. By the end of the first term he was answering in English and correcting our pronunciation. Is your younger one comfortable being away from you? For us that mattered more than the language.

He's fine being away, he runs into his preschool without looking back. That's reassuring, thank you. Two quiet months I can live with.

In my son's class there was always a mix of home languages. Telugu, Urdu, Hindi, a couple of Malayali kids. The children sorted it out among themselves faster than the parents did ❤
