My 8 year old pleated hers so tightly the filling came out the bottom. My 6 year old made a flat one and named it a "modak pizza". Mine looked like a small onion. They all tasted fine after steaming, which is what matters, and my partner has kindly decided we'll buy the ones for the puja.
Mumbai here, and the onion shape is my house style too. Every sweet shop near us is booked out this week. Saving 'modak pizza' for when my daughter is old enough to wreck the kitchen.
We bought a modak mould two years ago after a similar evening. It removes all the creativity and also all the leaking. My son still insists on freehanding one or two.
The mould is the only reason ours look like modaks. My 5 year old's job is pressing the filling in, and he treats it like a serious responsibility.
