Our daughter has offered to teach her little brother to swim. Let her, or keep paying the coach?

She swims well and has offered to teach her brother in the apartment pool, three evenings a week. Her conditions are that he listens to her and that we don't stand at the edge adding instructions. The alternative is the coach who runs batches at the same pool. He is good, but there are twelve children in the batch and my son spends most of the hour waiting on the steps. With his sister he would get the whole hour to himself. I'm less worried about safety, since there is a lifeguard, than about what happens between the two of them when he refuses to put his face in the water for the fourth day running. They get along well at the moment and I would like to keep it that way. She starts class 10 this June, which is another reason I'm hesitating.

I can only answer as the younger brother here. My sister taught me to ride a cycle. I remember her shouting far better than I remember the cycle. Maybe a two-week trial, with the coach kept as plan B? ❤️

I see something similar with older buddies at school. It works when the older child has one narrow job, for example getting him comfortable blowing bubbles with his face in the water, rather than 'teach him to swim'. A small goal gives her a way to say he did well that day. Open-ended teaching is where the arguments start. I would also ask her, before the first evening, what she plans to do if he simply refuses.

  • Pedda vadu tried teaching chinna vadu cricket one summer. It lasted four days 🙂 But they're a year apart, so everything was a competition. A sister that much older may have more patience. One thing I'd add: pay her something, even a small amount. Then it's a job, and she'll take a bad evening less personally.

mine are too small for pools but i've watched the older one 'teach' the younger one to climb the slide. the little one learns fine. it's the older one who gets upset when she does it her own way. probably the same at their ages, just wetter
