Next year's on-call rota is being drawn up now. When did you tell your manager?

I'm on the incident response rota at work, one week in four, and the team plans it months ahead. The draft for next year is going around this week. The baby will arrive somewhere in that window and I'd like to be off the rota around then. Still early, and only family knows. Did you tell your manager this early just for planning, or ask for gaps without saying why?

told my manager quite early for the same reason. kept it to dates, no details. the person making the rota only needed to know which weeks to leave me out of

  Dates, yes, but give a wide window rather than the due date. Babies ignore rotas. Mine arrived three weeks before the date everyone had planned around, during a week I had specifically been told was 'safe'.
