Nephew's parents want to add maths tuition. I'm the one who sees how tired he is by 9

My nephew stays with us on school days and goes home to his parents at weekends. His maths in the first unit test was lower than they expected, and they've found a tuition centre near our place, four evenings a week, 6 to 7.30. They are paying and it is their decision. But I'm the one at home on weekday evenings. He already finishes homework around 8 and is half asleep at dinner. I don't want to overrule his parents or sound as if I know better. How would you raise this, as the relative who sees the weekday side?

teacher here. i'd ask to see his test paper first and look at what kind of mistakes they were. if it's careless errors from being tired, four evenings of tuition won't fix that. if it's a gap in one topic, two sessions a week might be enough. that gives you something concrete to take to his parents, not an opinion about how tired he is

That's a good way in. You could also suggest a trial month with a review after the next test. Parents tend to agree to something with an end date more easily than to 'less'.

      Replying to @mint_veranda_7164

That I can propose without it turning into a debate. I'll bring it up when they come on Saturday.

Found the paper in his file this morning. Most of the marks went in one chapter, fractions, plus two silly slips. So it's closer to your second case.
