My teenage son quietly left the family WhatsApp group and the aunts have noticed

He left the extended family group sometime last week. Nobody would have noticed, except one of my cousins posted a photo of him and asked why he wasn't there to see it. Since then I've had three calls asking whether something has happened at home. His reason is simple. Around 150 messages a day, mostly forwards and good morning pictures, and his phone buzzes right through homework. He had asked earlier if he could mute it, but my mother, who lives with us, told him muting the family is rude. So he left instead. I understand him completely. I also know my mother and two of my aunts are hurt. Do I ask him to rejoin and mute it quietly, or let him manage his relatives himself at his age?

Honestly I'd have left at his age too if anyone had let me 🤷 My uncle still sends a sunrise every morning at 5.40. Does he need to be in it for anything important?

Not really. Anything important comes through me or my partner anyway. The one real loss is that his grandmother likes seeing him react to her posts, which I hadn't thought about until tonight.

Has anyone said anything to him directly, or only to you?

Could he rejoin and archive the chat? It stays in the list, nobody can see he's ignoring it, and his phone stays quiet.

Mine left at 15, in his class 10 year. The aunts talked about it for about a month and then forgot. What helped was that he started calling his grandmother directly once a week. She liked that far more than him reacting to forwards.
