Leather-ball kit for a 9 year old after one summer camp: buy it all, borrow, or wait?

sage_notebook_6145

Our son started a summer cricket camp near LB Nagar in April with a tennis ball. This week the coach moved a few of the boys, including him, to leather ball and handed us a list: helmet, pads, gloves, abdominal guard, bat. The camp ends when school reopens. He wants to carry on in the regular batch, but he has been this keen on other things before and dropped them within a few months. Do we buy the full kit now, borrow, or buy only the protective things and use the academy bat? And does a nine year old's kit last more than a season before he outgrows it?

Ours is 5 and still at the swing-at-everything stage, so I'm going by my nephew here. His parents bought the helmet and guard new and everything else second-hand from older boys at the academy. Pads were outgrown in a year, the helmet lasted two :)

The protective items should fit him properly and be his own, especially the helmet and the guard. Pads and gloves can be borrowed or bought second-hand, because they are outgrown quickly. The bat is the one thing coaches tend to have strong views about at this age, since one that is too heavy changes how a boy plays. I would ask the coach before buying. Is the regular batch at the same academy as the camp?
