Laptops for everything from grade 6, so we're looking at Valli High School in Shaikpet

Son is 10, in grade 5 at an IB school. From grade 6 their middle years go almost fully onto laptops, and between that and a parents' group that sends 200 messages a day, I've started looking at simpler options for next year. Valli High School in Shaikpet came up when a neighbour mentioned it. State Board, runs up to class 10, and not far from Attapur. Two things I'd like to hear about from anyone who knows it, or who has made a similar switch: - how much written work and homework there is in classes 6 and 7 - how the school shares notices with parents. Circulars, an app, a group? I'd honestly take a paper diary at this point 🤷 Also open to hearing that IB to State Board at 11 is a bad idea, if you've seen it go badly.

Not from Valli, and not a switch I've made, but I'll share how I'd see the tradeoff, since my son is also 10. The screen worry is real; I'd still separate it from the board decision. You'd be changing the screen situation, the teaching style and the exam pattern all at once. If the laptop programme is the main problem, it may be worth asking the current school how much of the day is on screens before deciding the rest. If you're unhappy with the IB approach generally, then the switch makes more sense.

the separating part is a good point. we did something similar choosing a preschool and kept mixing three different worries into one. didn't make us decide any faster though

Agree with asking how much is really on screens. When my daughter's school announced 'digital first' in grade 6, it turned out to mean homework got submitted online. Classwork was still mostly notebooks. The 200 messages a day though, a new school won't fix that. Every school has that group. It's the parents, not the board 😂

Fair, I hadn't pulled those apart. Will ask the current school for an actual weekly screen-time figure before going further. And yes, the group is probably the same everywhere, I'm just tired of it 🤷

Separating them makes sense. One more thing to weigh: 11 to 12 is a year when a lot changes for children anyway. Our son is 12, and this past year he went noticeably quieter about everything, school included. Adding a new school on top of that is a lot at once. Not a reason against the move, just something to plan around.

I can't speak about Valli in particular. From the school side, the questions I'd take to any visit for a mid-stage switch are concrete ones. Ask to see a class 6 notebook and a sample weekly homework sheet. Ask how they assess a new admission coming from a different board, and whether there is any bridging in the first term. Ask who parents contact with a day-to-day question and how quickly they hear back. The answers tell you more than the prospectus will.
