Is it awkward to ask the admissions office what a 4 year old is expected to know?

My son is 4 and we're applying to a couple of schools for 2027. Last week I caught myself asking him to count backwards from 20 at the dinner table, because someone in a parents' group said one school asks that. He did it, then asked why I was being a teacher. I'd rather just phone the schools and ask what they look for at the interaction. Is that a normal thing to do, or does it come across as a parent trying to prep for the test? I don't want him walking in with a label before he's said a word.

not awkward. they get asked this every day. did it for my son years back, got a two-line answer, slept better that night 😄

we asked. got told 'no preparation needed'. then the interaction had a puzzle my daughter had never seen before. so ask, but keep some salt handy.

A puzzle she hadn't seen may have been the point, though. I'd guess they wanted to see how she approaches something new, not whether she'd practised it. Which fits with 'no preparation needed', in a way.
