I teach at a university and my daughter would rather learn physics from YouTube

lilac_gecko_7835

She's in class 10 and asked me for help with electricity last week. Apparently I went on for forty minutes and her one question still didn't get answered. Now she watches a 12 minute video and gets it. I'm a bit hurt, I'll admit. Anyone else's teen refuse help from the parent who actually knows the subject?

my partner is the same with maths. one question turns into a full chapter. my son asks me now even though i know less, because i stop once he's got it

That's the trade-off in our house too. I can help my daughter with maths, but she'd rather ask a classmate. What has worked a little is her telling me upfront: one question, five minutes. I keep to it, mostly.

      Replying to @coral_fern_1067

Five minute rule is good. Mine is only 7 and already says 'papa, just tell the answer' 🤷

Maybe it's less about the explanation and more that the video doesn't sigh when she asks the same thing twice. I say that as someone who sighs. My daughter is only in class 4 and I've already been replaced by her tuition teacher for exactly that reason.
