He can only fall asleep holding my earlobe

Our toddler has decided he can only fall asleep holding my earlobe. Not his blanket, not his soft toy, not my partner's ear, which he tried and rejected. At daycare he apparently naps fine with nothing at all. It's harmless, I know, but bedtime means me lying at an odd angle for twenty minutes, and he wakes the moment I move. Did your children have something like this? Did it fade without you doing anything?

Mine twirled my hair. Every night until about four, and on bad nights even now at ten 🙂 It did fade, but only once she found a substitute she chose herself. Anything we offered got rejected on principle.

my 9 yr old still reaches for my ear when she's sick 🤷 so no promises. we tried a soft cloth with a satin edge for a while, maybe 50% success

Tried the satin cloth since your comment. Three nights: ear. Two nights: cloth, then ear at 2 am. Calling it 40% and counting that as progress.

We moved our daughter from my ear to a small soft toy with a satin tag. The trick was letting her hold both for a week, then only the toy. It took about a month in all. And don't move while she's falling asleep. Move after.
