Grandfather here. Does anyone cycle their child to Shivaji Vidya Peeth in Jubilee Hills?

basil_puzzle_9895

My granddaughter is in class 1 at another school, and her parents are considering Shivaji Vidya Peeth High School for next year. The decision is theirs; I am only doing the groundwork, because she spends most afternoons with me and I would be doing many of the school runs. We live about a kilometre and a half from the school. I cycle every morning, and she has just become confident on her own small cycle. My idea is to ride with her, me on the traffic side, keeping to the inner lanes rather than the main road. Is this realistic near that school at drop-off time? Do any children arrive by cycle, and is there anywhere to leave one? I would like to hear from anyone who has seen the morning traffic there before I raise it with her parents and get laughed at.

I haven't seen that particular gate in the mornings, but near most Jubilee Hills schools the trouble at drop-off is less the main road and more cars stopping suddenly and doors opening without anyone looking. If you try it, maybe ride the route once on a school morning without her, at the real time, and see how it feels.

Love this idea. No experience with the school, but please post how it goes if her parents agree.

Our elder cycled to school with his ajoba for about a year in class 2. Different school, Malkajgiri side, about a kilometre. It worked on days they left 15 minutes early, before the vans came in. On late days it was stressful for both of them. The thing we hadn't thought about was where to keep the cycle. His school didn't allow them inside the gate, so ajoba ended up wheeling two cycles home every morning.

Wheeling two cycles home is exactly the sort of detail I had not thought of. I could manage it with one hand on each, but at my age I would rather not. I will ask the school office about a cycle stand before anything else.

Also ask whether they let young children cycle in at all. Some schools only allow cycles from class 6 or so. Better to know before you plan.

Did the cycling thing with my daughter in class 2, but only on Saturdays when the roads were empty. Weekday mornings near any school are a different world. Maybe start with the return trip in the afternoons, which tend to be calmer, and see how she handles it.

One small correction to the plan, if I may. You riding on the traffic side helps less than it feels like it does. A 6 or 7 year old wobbles or stops without warning, and the risk is the car behind her, not beside her. We had better luck with the child in front on quiet lanes, and both of us walking the cycles across every junction. Slower, much calmer. The rest of the family still thinks I'm overcautious, ha.
