Grade 5 puberty session next week. Did you talk to your daughter before or after?

Consent form came home today for a session with the school counsellor, girls and boys separately. We signed it. My partner and I have covered some of it with her already, not all of it. Now I can't decide whether to fill in the rest before the school does, or let the session open it up and answer whatever she brings home. She is still mortified if anyone says the word 'bra' at the dinner table. Her little brother finds this hilarious, which doesn't help.

From the school side: these sessions are usually pitched quite carefully, but they're short and there's a room full of classmates, so children rarely ask the question they really have. A quick word beforehand, even just 'you'll hear some of this next week, ask me anything after', seems to make the follow-up conversation easier for most families I've spoken to. You can also ask the school for the outline. Most will share it.

I have boys, and younger ones, so this is a plan rather than experience. My inclination is the short heads-up before, as suggested above, and then letting the child lead afterwards. The thing I would listen for is what her friends say about it on the bus. That version is usually the one that needs correcting.
