Full marks on the sums, 3 out of 15 on the 'application' section. What are these questions?

Class 7 maths final. The paper came back this week. Every straightforward sum is correct. The last section, five questions headed 'application based', she scored 3 out of 15. The teacher's note says 'practise more application questions'. Practise what, from where? The textbook has no section with that name. If your child's school uses this term, what does such a question look like, and where do you find more of them?

From what I've seen in my grandson's papers, these are the word problems where the question doesn't tell you which chapter it belongs to. A shopkeeper, a tank filling up, two trains. The maths is the same, the reading is the hard part. Has she shown you the paper itself? I would sit with her and ask her to say out loud what each question was asking, before looking at any working. With him the mistakes were mostly in the reading.

Agree about the reading. Our son's school gave a separate practice booklet for these after parents raised it at a PTM, so it may be worth asking the teacher directly for sample questions instead of guessing from the textbook. Did the teacher mark where each answer went wrong, or just give the total?
