Daycare wants her on fixed nap times before she joins. She naps whenever she likes

fern_sketch_1447

Our daughter starts at a daycare near my partner's work in May. They have asked that she be on a 'predictable' nap routine before joining, two naps at roughly set times. At home she naps when she is tired, anywhere between forty minutes and three hours after waking. We tried moving one nap to a fixed time last week and she ended up overtired and furious. Did you change your baby's naps before daycare, or did the daycare's routine take over by itself?

My son also never slept on time as a baby. In Bhubaneswar the creche lady told me don't worry, babies follow other babies after one week. It was true for him. We are shifting to Hyderabad soon, now I am searching for his school.

This was years ago, but our daycare said the same and she copied the other babies within a fortnight. If you want to do something, make the nap just before you leave home predictable, not every nap.

Our son starts daycare in a couple of months and we got the same note. When I asked, the manager said babies who come in with no routine usually fall into the room's nap times within two or three weeks, and that they'd rather we didn't fight it at home first. Not tested yet, so I can't promise she's right.

I remember being told the same thing and feeling we had failed at something before she had even started. She's seven now. Nobody has asked about her naps for years.

That made me laugh, thank you. It does feel like a test we're failing in advance.

My son never had fixed sleep times when small, even now not fully. Some children take longer for routines and that is okay. Ask the daycare what they do if she doesn't sleep at their time. Their answer will tell you how flexible they are.

'Predictable' could mean anything. Ask them for the actual nap times in her age group and what they do with a baby who is awake while the room sleeps. If the answer is 'they all sleep', I'd be a little wary.
