Daughter wants to spend the last week of her holidays 'interning' at my office

mellow_rain_9072

She's going into class 10 and has decided she wants to see what we do at the firm before school starts. She has asked to come in for five days, sit with the design team and 'do real work'. I co-run the place, so permission is not the issue, but I'm not sure how my team will feel about minding the boss's daughter for a week. Has anyone brought a teenager into their workplace like this? Did it help, or did they end up in a corner with their phone?

had my son at the clinic for two days last summer. first day he loved it, second day he was bored by 11. give her one small real task with a deadline, not 'sit with the team'. that's what kept him interested

The real task is the key part. When my son spent a day at my office, someone gave him a feature to test and asked him to write down everything that broke. He found three bugs and has mentioned it at every family dinner since.

We've had staff children shadow at our school, and it goes best when one person owns her for the week and she ends with something to show, even a short presentation. Five days is plenty. Tell your team upfront that it's an experiment and they can say if it isn't working.

My son sits at my shop counter every holiday. He is only 9, but he learned more about counting money there than in school. For your daughter also, real work will teach her something. Don't make it too easy for her.
