Class 7 son learns history from ten-minute video summaries. His marks are fine. Does it matter?

My son has stopped reading the history and civics chapters. He watches a short summary video for each one, makes a few notes, and his marks in the first assessment were perfectly respectable. I am not against videos. What I cannot tell is whether he is learning history or learning how to answer history questions, and whether that difference shows up in class 8 or 9 when the chapters get longer. Have any of you seen this play out over a few years?

Mine does the same with geography! What we settled on: he watches the summary first and then reads the chapter, because once he knows the story the reading goes much faster. He grumbled for a week and then stopped noticing.

I studied in Telugu medium so for my daughter's English lessons I also watch videos with her. For me they help a lot. But in the exam they ask lines from the book, not from the video. Maybe for history also the teacher wants the book words.

That is a fair point about the question format. His paper has 'explain in your own words' sections, which the summaries suit well. The source-based questions are where he lost marks, and those need the actual text. I will look at that before deciding anything.
