Class 7 daughter has to choose Hindi or French for next year, and she has strong opinions

willow_quilt_4750

Our daughter's school wants class 7 students to choose between Hindi and French for class 8 onwards, by the end of November. She wants French. Her reasons are that Hindi grammar is 'all exceptions' and French 'at least sounds nice'. We speak Telugu at home and live in Chennai, so nobody at home can help with either. My partner thinks Hindi is more useful day to day. I think a 12 year old picking the subject she'll open is worth something. Which way did your kids go, and did either turn out harder later than expected?

our older one had to pick telugu or hindi when she started class 1. we went with 'someone at home can help'. then found out nobody at home actually remembers hindi grammar, we just thought we did

that's the part that bothers me. nobody here can help with either, so whatever she picks she's doing it on her own. which might be the answer in itself.

'Someone at home can help' stops mattering by class 6 or so anyway. And more useful how? Speaking it, or marks? Those point to different answers. I'd ask her which one she would revise without being told.
