Class 3 weekly assessments are open-book now, so he's stopped revising anything

maple_notebook_4281

Our son's school has changed its weekly class 3 assessments to open-book this term. The circular says the aim is to test understanding rather than memory, and I can see the sense in that. What I have observed so far, which is only three weeks, is that he no longer looks at anything before an assessment. His reasoning is that the book will be there. His scores have not dropped, so I cannot say it is a problem yet. It may simply be that the early chapters are easy. My partner, who teaches, thinks I should leave it alone. I am less sure. Has anyone's child had open-book assessments at this age, and did the lack of revision catch up with them later?

Open book in class 3, we'd have been thrilled in our time :) My elder one had a few open-book tests in class 8. The first one she didn't prepare at all and couldn't find anything in time. After that she started reading the chapter just to know where things were. Maybe he needs one bad week to find that out for himself.

Open-book how? Textbook only, or notebooks too? And what do the questions look like? If they are still fill-in-the-blanks from page 23, not revising costs him nothing. If they ask him to explain why, the book won't save him for long. Ask to see one paper before you decide anything.
