Class 3 comprehension, and she answers from her imagination instead of the passage

maple_drum_7995

Class 3 has started unseen passages with questions. Our daughter reads well and enjoys the stories, but her answers come from wherever her imagination takes her. The passage says the boy went to the market for onions; she writes that he went to buy a kite because it was windy. The teacher marked most of it wrong, fairly. When I sit with her she can find the right line if I point to the paragraph, but left alone she goes back to her own version. I don't want to squash the imagination, but she also needs to learn what the question is asking. How did you teach this?

I'd separate two things first: whether she can't locate the answer, or whether she locates it and prefers her own. From what you describe it's the second, which is the easier one. When my daughter was that age we asked her to underline the sentence that answered the question before writing anything. If she couldn't underline it, it wasn't the answer.

mine wrote that the dog in the story was 'golden because he was happy'. passage said brown 😂 she's 11 now and still adds a bit of flavour

Give the stories somewhere else to go. Our son kept a separate notebook for 'his versions', and once he knew those were allowed, the test answers started coming from the page.

my son did this all through class 3. still does in science sometimes. what worked a bit was asking 'show me where it says that' every single time. annoying for both of us but it stuck eventually
