Class 11 son wants a gearless scooter licence to ride to school. What did other families decide?

Our class 11 son has found out that at sixteen you can get a licence for a low-powered gearless scooter. He has researched it thoroughly and presented it at dinner, including the distance to school and what we spend on his drops and pickups. I am not opposed in principle, but I don't know what the process involves, or whether schools allow students to ride in. My assumption is that most don't, but that is only an assumption. If your child rode to school at sixteen or seventeen, how did you decide, and what conditions did you set?

Ask the school first. At my school students under 18 are not allowed to park two-wheelers on campus, and many schools have a similar rule. Don't buy anything until you've seen their policy in writing.

my daughter's friends have started talking about this too. i haven't said anything yet. i see a lot of road accident reports at work and i know that's colouring how i feel, so i'm reading this more than answering it.
