Another mother says my son pushed hers. My son says her son grabbed his cycle.

Chinnodu is 8. Yesterday evening in the society park there was some fight over a cycle. This morning the other boy's mother messaged me, very politely, saying my son pushed hers and he fell and scraped his knee. My son's version: the other boy took his cycle without asking and wouldn't give it back, so he pulled it and the boy fell. I wasn't there, she wasn't there. Both boys are telling it their own way. I don't want to call my child a liar in front of her, and I also don't want to defend him blindly. How do you reply to a message like this without deciding the whole story over chat? 🙂

Reply to the injury first and the story later. Something like "Sorry he got hurt, hope the knee is okay. My son says there was a fight over the cycle, I'll talk to him properly." Then meet her in person if it needs more.

I have watched my granddaughter's playground disputes from the bench for some years now, and the two accounts almost never match. Usually both children are describing something that did happen. I would suggest meeting the other mother in person, with both boys there if she agrees, and letting each one tell it while the adults only listen. At eight they often settle it between themselves faster than the parents do.

Mine is only 2 and we already have this at the play area, minus the explaining. The other parent and I just end up apologising to each other on repeat :) I suppose it gets more complicated once they can argue their case.
