A student has started checking every friend's online status

My child waits for classmates to answer a group message, then keeps checking whether each person is online. The waiting is eating into time for other things. I don't want to lecture about phones; I want to discuss when a message actually requires a quick reply. Any ideas?

Online status doesn't mean somebody is available to discuss schoolwork.

Agree on a reasonable response window for project messages.

Maybe the group can agree which messages truly require prompt answers and which can wait.
